GAUGES |
Overview |
I wanted to be able o keep an eye on the way my car was running better than the stock gauges allowed me to, so I started to put more gauges in. The stock ones are not that accurate to begin with, so anything you put in will help out.
I decided to go with Autometer gauges, because they are probably the biggest gauge manufacturer around, and they also have the best assortment of gauges available. They are also very high quality, which means a lot.
I was originally going to go with a black faced gauge, but then I looked into the white faced ones. I decided on the Ultra Series, which as a silver colored face.

I decided that I wanted to put same gauges in the area originally occupied by the HVAC controls. Since they are long gone, this was a perfect spot. It was right in the middle of the dash board area, which means the gauges are very easy to see. Also, this location made it pretty easy to wire them up.

I wanted the gauges to look as "stock" as possible in the car, so I got one of the Autometer A-Pillar Gauge Pods. It holds two of the 2-1/16" gauges, and fits nicely on the A-pillar. It fits pretty well, and looks good.
Here is a pic of the pod with two gauges installed. The pod is mounted to the molding that covers the A-pillar.

This is obviously a shot of the rear of the gauge pod. You can see the wiring for both the Voltage Gauge and the Air/Fuel ratio gauge.

Here is the Air/Fuel ratio gauge in operation. It is pretty cool to watch this thing go back and forth. There are a set of LEDs that correspond with lean, rich, and stoichiometric engine operation.

I wanted to add a shift light so I could know when to shift, without having to keep an eye on the tach. It's a lot easier to just throw it in the higher gear when there is a huge red light going off right in front of you.
It wasn't until I hooked this bad boy up that I realized how INACCURATE the factory tach is in Thirdgens. I could have a 5200 rpm module in the shift light, and it would not go off until the factory tach was reading like 6300 rpm. That is a HUGE difference. So, now I actually have an idea of how fast the engine is spinning.
The picture that you see here is a shot of the shift light installed in the car. I mounted it in this location because there wasn't anywhere better to mount it, and it worked out pretty well because it is VERY visible from where I sit when I drive the car.

The installation was pretty straightforward. There is a wire going to an ignition power source, and another going to the tach output of the 6-AL.
